San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State University finally had its eight-game unbeaten and seven-game win streak snapped by visiting UNLV, 1-0, in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's soccer action at Spartan Stadium on Friday night, October 30.
With the loss, San Jose State drops to 9-7-1 overall and 4-1 in the MPSF. The result also marked the Spartans' first home loss in 2009 after a 5-0-1 start, and was their first defeat in San Jose in over a year, having gone 9-0-1 there since October 17, 2008. UNLV improves to 7-5-3 overall and 1-3-1 in league play.
The lone score of the match came at the 74:37 mark, when Roberto Farfan put a cross in from the left side, and Will Ziegahn got up off the ground the highest to nod the ball in from the middle of the penalty area, into the ceiling of the goal. It was his third score of the campaign.
Jonathan Lester had four stops for San Jose State, including a trio of point-blank efforts. Roland Swanson made three saves to notch the shutout in net for UNLV.
A dreary first half saw three shots taken by each side. UNLV out-shot the Spartans on the night, 9-6, led by Nicholas DeLeon and Zach Kupfer with two apiece. Both of DeLeon's attempts were on goal. Nick Cukar led the way for San Jose State with a pair of shots. The Spartans' best opportunity arguably came in the 58th minute, when Ricky Dorrego's hard left-footed shot smacked off the crossbar and was corralled by Swanson as Cukar pursued the rebound.
The Spartan men's loss also snapped an incredible combined unbeaten string of 22 games and 87 days between the San Jose State men and women. The Spartan women clinched the first regular-season Western Athletic Conference crown with a 2-1 home win over Fresno State in the first half of Friday night's doubleheader, stretching their unbeaten streak to 14 matches, and a 1-0 double-overtime win by Nevada at New Mexico State.
San Jose State plays one final home match for the 2009 season, this Sunday afternoon, November 1, against MPSF rival New Mexico. Kick-off on Senior Day is slated for approximately 1:00 p.m., following a special ceremony honoring Spartan seniors Cukar, Brian McGuire, Oscar Monjaras and Colby Moore.
