Denver, Colo. The San Jose State University men’s soccer team fell to the Pioneers of Denver, 2-1, in overtime on Monday, October 29. Ryan Aweida scored both goals for the Pioneers on corner kicks. Junior Ed Brand scored the lone goal for the Spartans, tying the game on a penalty kick with just 16 second left to play in regulation. The loss drops San Jose State’s record to 8-6-0 overall and 3-2-0 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation while the Pioneers improve to 6-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the conference.
“This was one of the most frustrating games in a long while,” said head coach Gary St. Clair. “We feel that we dominated the game and we had 5-10 outstanding chances but we just could not find the back of the net.”
The Pioneers took the lead in the 78th minute on a corner kick. Joe Mathot set the ball for Aweida, who headed it into the back of the Spartans’ goal.
With just 16 second left on the clock, Brand tied the game on a penalty kick after Denver’s Michael Perry was called for a handball in the box.
The game-winner for the Pioneers came at 3:14 into overtime as Aweida headed a corner kick by Collin Audley into the top corner of the net.
The Spartans were aggressive on offense, out-shooting the Pioneers 15-6 in the second half. San Jose State took a total of 22 shots in the game.
It was a physical game for both sides as 18 fouls were called and nine yellow cards issued.
San Jose State returns to Spartan Stadium this weekend for the two final home games of the 2007 season. The Spartans will host the Falcons of Air Force on Friday night, November 2 at 7:00 p.m. and conclude the home season with a 1:00 p.m. game against Denver on Sunday, November 4.
