First-place men's soccer clips Falcons in overtime battle

Colorado Springs, Colo.---The San Jose State men’s soccer team (9-4-2, 5-1 MPSF) defeated the Air Force Falcons (5-7-2, 3-1-1) 1-0 in double-overtime on a penalty kick by freshman defender Ed Brand for his first goal of his collegiate career. The win keeps the Spartans in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation standings.

“Our team showed unbelievable character, heart and will,” head coach Gary St. Clair said.

The win evened the Spartans' series with the Falcons after they lost to Air Force 3-2 at Spartan Field last Friday, Oct. 21. The Spartans outshot the Falcons, 19-15.

"It was great to return the favor to them after they beat us last week,” St. Clair said. “Our back line is really what kept us in the game tonight. Dylan (Pender), Ed (Brand), Gavin (Wenyon) and Darrin (Domingo) did an outstanding job.”

St. Clair said the high elevation in Colorado affected his team.

“The altitude was really tough, which is why I think our team’s effort and heart was so impressive today,” St. Clair.

The Spartans continue on the road at Denver, Colo., Sunday, Oct. 30, taking on the Denver Pioneers at 11 a.m. in another MPSF match. They defeated the Pioneers 3-1 at Spartan Stadium Sunday, Oct. 23.
