Men's soccer open season with overtime loss

RIVERSIDE, Calif.—Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime the tying and taking the game lead in the second period, the San Jose State University men’s soccer team lost, 3-2, in overtime to UC Riverside on a hot Sunday afternoon at the UCR Lower Fields with a 105 game time temperature.

The Highlanders’ Ben Davies handed the Spartans a loss with his header goal in the 99th minute of the game. The game was the Spartans’ first game of the season and the Highlanders second of the year.

The Spartans out shot UC Riverside, 7-6, in the first half, but it was the Highlanders scoring first. Steven Vasquez took a pass from Jordan Arias and scored to give to take a 1-0 lead.

The score remained the same until two minutes in the second half when freshman Randy Poggio scored an unassisted goal to tie the game. The Spartans continued to pressure the defense and took the lead when another first year player, junior Kohta Gaines outplayed the goalkeeper, pulling him off the net to score an unassisted goal in the 68th minute.

The Spartan kept high pressure in the defensive zone trying to protect the lead, but in 80th minute the Highlanders’ Juan Gutierrez was able to squeeze a free kick over the defense and over the head of the Spartan goalkeep, Dan Benton.

The Spartans managed to outshoot the Highlanders, 18-10. Benton recorded six saves for San Jose State and Josh Alexander recorded seven.
