McKinney Scores Game-Winner for Men's Soccer Team

San Jose-Senior Tim McKinney scored the game-winning goal with 42 seconds remaining in the second overtime as the San Jose State men's soccer team defeated Denver, 3-2, in 2OT Sunday afternoon at Spartan Soccer Field.

The game-winning goal came as Johnny Gonzalez brought the ball up the left side of field before passing it to Aaron Perego in the box. Perego then touched the ball to his right to McKinney who shot the ball past Pioneer keeper Matt Bredehoft.

Denver started the scoring in the match with the only goal of the first period. Scott Davidson scored an unassisted goal as the ball bounced around in front of Spartan keeper Daniel Benton. San Jose State outshot the Pioneers 9-6 in the first half.

Frank Mata tied the match at 1-1 in the 64 minute with a goal off a breakaway up the left side. He took a pass from Chris Mackey to score the game-tying goal.

The Pioneers took a 2-1 lead in the 75th minute on a Kyle Christensen goal which was assisted by James Merriman and Davidson. The Spartans then tied the match in the 76th minute on a Gonzales goal from Heber Mora.

San Jose State improves to 4-9-1 overall and 3-4 in the MPSF while Denver falls to 8-4-1 overall and 5-2 in the MPSF.
