Men's soccer get 2-1 win at Saint Mary's

MORAGA, Calif.—Freshman netminder Michael Lawrence recorded his first win of his career to give the men’s soccer team a 2-1 victory over Saint Mary on Friday, October 11, on Garaventa Field.

Lawrence made four saves for the Spartans (5-7-0) and junior Tomislav Jozinovic and senior Fausto Villegas each recorded a goal in the game. For the Gaels (2-8-3), Patrick Lower scored the lone goal.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead at the 13:15 minute mark when Jozinovic beat a Gael defender and found an open look, scoring an unassisted goal past goalkeeper Aaron Valdez.

At the end of the first half the Spartans led 1-0, while SJSU outshot the Gaels 5-3.

The Gaels tied up the score in the second half at the 73:34 minute mark when Alex Monsalve assisted Lower for a beautiful shot to the upper right corner.

But with 1:04 left in the game the Spartans' Fausto Villegas scored the game-winner on an open goal to give SJSU the 2-1 victory.

SMC's Valdez recorded six saves in the game to Lawrence’s four. The Spartans outshot the Gaels 14-7 in the match.

San Jose State is back in action next Monday when they host Notre Dame de Namur at 7:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
