Denver, Colo. - The San Jose men's soccer team (6-6-1, 3-2-1 MPSF) lost its first conference road match of the year 4-0 to the Denver Pioneers (7-4-1, 2-3-1 MPSF) on Friday night in Denver.
The Spartans got off just four shots on the night with one being on frame. DU had 22 attempts, 11 on goal. This was the second straight conference road match where San Jose State took only four shots.
The Pioneers didn't take long to get on the board. Just 2:33 in Josh Wren put a free kick from inside the corner flag into the box where Blake Shannon headed it into the right side of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
In the 23rd minute Denver doubled its advantage when Cole Chapleski headed a crossing pass from Malcolm Harris past Spartans keeper Michael Schwinn for a 2-0 lead, which the Pioneers took into the half.
San Jose State was out shot 3-to-9 in the first 45 minutes. Schwinn, making his first appearance in goal in three matches, stopped two of the four Denver shots on goal. The Spartans got one of their three shots on frame in the first half.
In the second half, Denver controlled the play with 13 attempts to San Jose State's one.
Chapleski picked up his second goal of the match at the 80:29 mark and a penalty kick, barely 30 seconds later, was the fourth and final goal of the night.
Steven Sanchez led the Spartans with two shots. Salceda had one and in his first action for San Jose State AJ Rana, playing as a reserve, took one.
Shannon Blake led 11 Pioneers who attempted shots. He had a game-high four tries. In goal Oliver Brown made one save in earning the win.
San Jose State plays its final regular-season road match on Sunday at Air Force. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (PT).
