SAN JOSE - San Jose State University improved to 13-0-1 overall Thursday with a 4-1 victory over Sacramento State in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mountain Division game at Spartan Stadium.
The Spartans, ranked number one in this week's NSCAA coaches top 25, are 5-0-0 in MPSF play. Sacramento State dropped to 0-5 in conference games, 4-9-1 overall.
Four different Spartans scored goals during the game. Cesar Gutierrez had three assists on the night.
San Jose State took a 1-0 lead at the 25:19 mark on a goal by Isaias Bardales. His first shot was deflected by Sacramento State goalkeeper Joey Hills. Bardales quickly recovered the loose ball and put his second shot by Hills into the lower right corner of the net. Tony Chang and Gutierrez were credited with assists on the play.
The Spartans scored three second-half goals to clinch the win. Gareth Williams gave SJSU a 2-0 lead at the 58:58 mark on an assist from Gutierrez. About 4 1/2 minutes later, Lars Lyssand connect on another assist from Gutierrez for a 3-0 advantage.
Sacramento State got on the scoreboard at 74:58 on a goal by Sean Luigs. The assist on the play was credited to David Fraser.
Carter Hernandez ended the scoring for San Jose State at the 80:35 mark with an unassisted goal.
The Spartans host Fresno State Sunday at 1:00 p.m. in the final home game of the regular season for San Jose State.
