Colorado Springs, Colo. Goals scored by junior Hiroki Akiyama and senior Ismael Ibarra in the final nine minutes of play gave San Jose State University men’s soccer a 3-1 victory over Air Force on Friday night, October 19. The win improves the Spartans’ record to 8-5-0 overall and 3-1-0 in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play. With the loss, the Falcons fall to 3-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in the conference.
"We played very well in the first half," said head coach Gary St. Clair. "We made adjustments at halftime and played a phenomenal second half. We dominated play and I was pleased with the performance. We got three points and hopefully we'll get another three on Sunday."
The game-winner tallied by Akiyama was his first of the season. The midfielder knocked in a rebound shot right in front of the net after Air Force goalie Brian Guyette made a save on a shot from the right side by Edward Murillo-Jimenez.
The Spartans got an early lead in the game on a goal by Savio Carrijo in the ninth minute. Ricky Dorrego started the play with a long pass from mid field that Ibarra one-touched from the top of the box to Carrijo on the right side. Carrijo collected the pass and chipped a shot over Guyette to give San Jose State a 1-0 lead.
Kevin Rosser responded late in the first half for the Falcons with the first goal of his career in the 42 nd minute of play. He blasted a shot from 22 yards that San Jose State’s goalkeeper Lewis Sweeney got a hand on, but was unable to stop. Kyle Moses and Chris Mathews assisted on the play.
The Spartans put the game away with 59 seconds left to play on a goal by Ibarra. The senior took a pass at midfield from Gavin Wenyon that turned into a four-on-two as the Falcons were pushing up looking for the tying goal. Ibarra drove the ball up the field and fired a shot from 17 yards out and found the back of the net.
In goal, Sweeney tallied six saves for the Spartans while Guyette recorded seven for the Falcons. The Spartans out-shot the Falcons in shots on goal by a 10-7 margin.
