San Jose—Randy Poggio scored the Spartans third goal and assisted on the first goal to lead the San Jose State men’s soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Air Force Sunday afternoon in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at the Spartan Soccer Field.

San Jose State took 11 shots in the first half, but the 11th shot was the most crucial of the match. Andres Flores took the shot from 20 yards out in the front of the box and gave the Spartans a 1-0 lead with two seconds remaining in the first half. Air Force did threaten on the kickoff as Daniel Wasson shot the ball directly on goal, and Spartan goalie Tyler Tratten had to make one of his seven saves of the match.

The Spartans two goals in the second half came within 18 seconds of each other. Chris Mackey scored the first goal on a penalty kick after Randy Poggio was taken down in the box by the Falcons goalie Brian Dougal. Poggio then scored the third Spartan goal at 75:43 on a midfield pass from Jose Flores.

Tratten recorded his first collegiate shutout with the victory. The Spartans have shut out five opponents this season.

It was a very physical match with 27 fouls between the two teams. There were also five yellow cards and one red card on the Air Force bench.

San Jose State improves to 8-3-2 overall and 3-0 in the MPSF, while Air Force falls to 7-6-1 overall and 0-2 in the MPSF. The Spartans will play at UNLV on Thursday, October 23.
