San Jose, Calif.----San Jose men's soccer blanked Seattle University in a rainy and wet afternoon, 1-0, for its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win of the year. The Spartans improve to 7-5-2 and 1-2-2 in MPSF play and the Redhawks fall to 3-7-3, 1-3-1.
In the first half, San Jose State was aggressive early and controlled the tempo of play immediately. In the first 10 minutes they bombarded the Redhawk box, tallying five shots, including a Roberto Casteneda shot that hit the post 32 seconds into the game.
In the 28th minute the Spartans nearly scored when junior Nick Cashmere crossed the ball over to senior Josh Boemecke who knocked the ball past goalkeeper Jake Freener, until the referee called the Spartans offsides to scratch the point. The Spartans outshot the Redhawks 10-8 in the first half.
After a scoreless first half, SU began to find its groove with two early shots, but the Spartans answered with a shot that counted in the 59th minute. Sophomore Dylan Murphy crossed the ball to Nick Cukar, who shot it in to the lower right corner for his second goal of the season.
During a battle for the ball in the 31st minute, midfielder Josh Boemecke, who leads the team with seven goals, went down grabbing his ankle. Boemecke was helped off the field by his teammates and did not return to the game.
As the second half progressed, the Redhawks made Spartan keeper Jonathan Lester work for the shutout. In the 13th minute, Lester caught a rocket from fifteen yards out, making a spectacular save and his seventh of the day. Cukar's goal proved to be the difference maker and game-winner.
"It felt good to score a goal today and to get the monkey off my back, added Nick Cukar. "The win today was big time. We have a chip on our shoulders, and the win today proves that we can compete in the MPSF. It puts us back in the thick of things."
Goalkeeper Jonathan Lester completed his fourth shutout this season and finished the day with nine saves.
San Jose State will travel east to Colorado for a match against Air Force on Friday, October 22 at 7:00 p.m. and a match against Denver on Sunday, October 24 at 2:30 p.m.
