Men's soccer comes from behind in 2-1 win over Denver

Denver, Colo.-----Randy Poggio scored a shorthanded goal in the 86th minute as San Jose State University defeated the University of Denver, 2-1, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men’s soccer match.

The Spartans had a one-man advantage for the final 21:14 after Liam Girard of Denver was issued a red card. Poggio’s eighth goal of the season was assisted by Johnny Gonzalez.

Gonzalez pulled the Spartans even in the first half at 32:54 with his seventh goal in 2003 from an assist by Daniel Perez. Denver (6-6-1, 0-1 MPSF) scored first as Thomas Flynn headed in a throw in from Kyle Christensen at the 5:57 mark.

San Jose State (7-3-2, 2-0 MPSF) ended its first two-game losing streak of the season and remained in first place in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

Freshman Tyler Tratten made his second start in a row as the Spartan goalkeeper and was credited with 10 saves. Denver outshot San Jose State, 17-12.

San Jose State returns to action Sunday, October 19 against Air Force at the San Jose State soccer field located at 10th and Alma.
