Bakersfield, Calif.----In a defensive battle, San Jose State (6-5-2, 0-2-2 MPSF) came up short against Cal State Bakersfield (8-3-1, 3-0-1 MPSF), losing, 1-0, at Bakersfield on Friday night, October 15.
Both teams played the first 45 minutes at a leisurely pace with just six total shots. Despite the lack of shots, the Spartans produced strong individual efforts to create scoring chances. In the tenth minute, a blocked shot at midfield found its way to Roberto Casteneda, who fired a shot that was saved by Roadrunner goalkeeper Eric Shannon. Casteneda was in the mix of another opportunity two minutes later in the 12th minute, taking a corner kick down the line. The ball bounced between a couple of defenders and a foul was called on the Roadrunners, before the Spartans could get a shot off. San Jose State outshot the Roadrunners 4-2 in the first half.
CSUB created the first scoring chance in the second half, but Spartan keeper Jonathan Lester, held on to a hard-driven shot from Richard Menjivar. The Roadrunners quickly went on the offensive again, and this time Lester couldn't deny a point. Jesus Sanchez put through a header, who found the end of a cross from Ernesto Hinojosa.
With a greater sense of urgency established, San Jose State pushed forward for the equalizer when Nick Cukar nearly netted one through the CSUB goal, only to see Shannon tip the ball off the cross bar and out of play. The Spartans had a last good chance to tie the match in the 84th minute when Steven Sanchez took a short corner and found Sam Hodgson eight yards from goal. But Shannon denied Hodgson's strong header.
Jonathan Lester finished the night with four saves.
The Spartans return home to face Seattle University on Sunday, October 17. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
