Men's Soccer: Humphreys Sets School Record as Spartans Shut Out Denver

  • Box Score

San Jose State University goalkeeper Chris Humphreys set a school record with his 10th combined shutout of the season in the Spartans 2-0 win over the University of Denver Sunday at Spartan Stadium.

Humphreys broke the previous record of nine combined shutouts in a season, set by Rick Habenicht in 1968. Humphreys faced just two shots in the game and did not have any saves.

The game was a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mountain Division contest. The Spartans are 4-0-0 in conference play, 12-0-1 overall. Denver dropped to 2-1 in conference games, 6-4-0 on the season.

The Spartans took a 1-0 lead just 2:18 into the first half. Frank Sanfilippo tipped in a corner kick by Gareth Williams. The goal was the third of the season for Sanfilippo, while Williams was credited with his second assist of the year.

San Jose State's final goal was scored by Ryan Suarez at the 74:56 mark. On a free kick, Jorge Martinez kicked the ball to Sanfilippo. Sanfilippo then passed to Suarez, who scored from close range.

Suarez, who has four goals this season, has scored a goal in three straight Spartan games. Martinez, who has a goal or assist in every SJSU game this season, was credited with his ninth assist of the year. Sanfilippo now has four assists this season.

The Spartans return to action Thursday, Oct. 19 with a MPSF Mountain Division game against Sacramento State at Spartan Stadium. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
