San Jose, Calif. The San Jose State University men’s soccer team fell to the No. 22 Lobos of New Mexico, 4-1, on Friday, October 12. New Mexico took an early lead in the fourth minute of play and never looked back. The win improve the Lobos record to 7-3-1 overall and 2-0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The loss drops the Spartans’ record to 6-5-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the conference.
New Mexico scored their first goal of the game at the 3:28 mark of the first half. Jack Smithson headed the ball into the lower right corner on a free kick by Justin Davis.
The Lobos extended their lead at the 27:25 mark on a goal by Joey Vitagliano. Chris Wright recorded an assist on the play.
In the second half, New Mexico added two more goals to its total. P.J. Wilson tallied a goal on a free kick for the Lobos’ third goal and Blake Danaher notched a goal on a header. Stephen Brown passed the ball up on the left and found an open Danaher in front of the goal.
San Jose State tallied its lone goal of the game at 87:34 as senior Julio Gonzalez dribbled around the Lobos’ goalkeeper, Mike Graczyk, and drove the ball into the net. Colby Moore, returning from injury, recorded an assist on the play.
The game was an aggressive one as a total of 41 fouls were tallied and seven cards given.
Junior Lewis Sweeney made five saves in goal for the Spartans. San Jose State took 15 goals in the game while the Lobos took 18.
The Spartans return to action this Sunday, Oct. 14, against MPSF opponent, UNLV. The game is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Spartan Stadium and is the first game of a San Jose State soccer doubleheader.
