San Jose, Calif.----San Jose State men's soccer (6-4-2, 0-1-2 MPSF) fell short losing a hard-fought battle against CSU Bakersfield (7-3-1, 2-0-2 MPSF), 2-1 in overtime, Sunday afternoon, October 10.
San Jose State pounced on an early opportunity to score just eight minutes in, when Josh Boemecke knocked home his seventh of the season within a couple yards of the goal. Roberto Casteneda was credited with the assist. The Spartans continued to pressure the Roadrunner defense, knocking six shots and controlling the pace of the first half.
CSUB drew even just before the hour when Gyasi Zardes rang a shot off the cross bar and Keeyan Ghazanfarpour nodded the rebound for the equalizer. The game grew in intensity with the Spartans fighting hard, but San Jose State was unable to find the back of the net.
In the first minute of overtime, Jesus Sanchez received a cross from Gyasi Zardes who knocked the ball past Spartan goalkeeper Jonathan Lester for the game winner.
"This is a really disappointing loss. We (SJSU) played so hard and didn't get rewarded," stated head coach Gary St. Clair. "Unfortunately we couldn't find the back of the net and fell short."
Lester put away seven saves in the match and holds a 4-3-2 overall record.
The Spartans will have a chance for redemption when they travel to Bakersfield on Friday, October 15 at 7:00 p.m. Later in the weekend, San Jose State will take on Seattle U on Sunday, October 17 at 1:00 p.m.
