Men's soccer faces MPSF foes Denver, Air Force

THIS WEEK
San Jose State will return home to host MPSF rivals Denver and Air Force. The Spartans host the Pioneers on October 12. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Falcons and Spartans will square off on Sunday, October 15 at 12:00 p.m.

SPARTANS ROLL OVER UNLV

An own goal and a score by Hiroki Akiyama gave the San Jose State University men's soccer team a 2-1 victory on Sunday, October 8, in a critical Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match. The win evens the San Jose State overall record at 5-5-1 and improves the Spartans to 2-1 in the MPSF, giving them three more points for a total of six in the conference standings.

AKIYAMA NETS SECOND GOAL OF SEASON
Hiroki Akiyama netted his second goal of the season and third goal of his career in the match at UNLV on October 8. He leads the Spartans with five points on the season, and has taken a team-leading 24 shots. He also leads the team with two game-winning goals.

MANN NEARING TOP TEN
With his third shutout of the season against Sacramento State on October 1, goalkeeper Richard Mann is nearing the top ten list in shutouts for a career. Mann now has seven shutouts in 25 career games. With one more shutout, Mann will move into a tie for ninth place with eight career shutouts. The career record for shutouts is 18.

HOME SWEET HOME
After a season long five-game road trip in which San Jose State went 2-2-1, the Spartans return home to Spartan Stadium for five of their last seven matches of the season.

About Denver: The Pioneers come into Thursday night’s match with a perfect 3-0 record in MPSF play.

Player to Watch: Junior goalkeeper Matt Bredehoft. Bredehoft has four shutouts this season, as the Pioneers have shutout seven of their 11 opponents faced this season.

Head Coach Chad Ashton: Ashton is in his tenth season at DU. He is the second winningest coach in school history.

Last Season: San Jose State swept the season series from the Pioneers last season, winning 3-1 in Spartan Stadium, and then fighting to a 2-1 overtime victory at Denver.

About Air Force: The Falcons enter this week with a 2-8-1 overall record, and 1-2-0 in MPSF play.

Player to Watch: Freshman forward Josh Rhynard. He leads the Falcons with four goals and eight points through ten games.

Head Coach Lou Sagastume: Sagastume is in his 28th season with the Falcons. He has compiled a 277-176-42 record in his 27 seasons.

Last Season: The Spartans and Falcons split their two matches last season, as each team won on the opposing team’s home field. Air Force defeated San Jose State 3-2 in mid-October, and then the Spartans returned the favor a week later with a 1-0 double overtime win in Colorado Springs.
