Spartans to Meet Freso State, Denver

This week: San Jose State plays a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation counting games this week. The Spartans are at Fresno State on Thursday for a 7:00 p.m. game, then return home on Sunday for a 1:00 p.m. game against the University of Denver.

Season record: San Jose State is 10-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 in conference games. The Spartans' overall record is its best start since 1998, when San Jose State won its first nine games without a loss or tie.

Spartans in the MPSF: San Jose State is in a three-way deadlock for first place in the Mountain Division of the MPSF. The Spartans, Denver and Air Force all have six points (two wins) in division play. San Jose State and Denver are both 2-0, while Air Force is 2-1. Air Force's only loss in division play was to the Spartans, a 3-0 decision on Oct. 1 at Spartan Stadium.

Spartans vs. Fresno State and Denver: Fresno State holds a 24-6-1 advantage in the all-time series. The last San Jose State win in the series was in 1980, although the two teams did battle to a 2-2 tie in 1993. Last year Fresno State won 3-2 in overtime in Fresno, and recorded a 2-1 win at Spartan Stadium.

The University of Denver leads the all-time series, 2-0, but Sunday's game will be the first meeting between the two teams since 1970.

Spartans in the national rankings: San Jose State took a few more steps up the ladder in this week's NSCAA coaches top 25. The Spartans are ranked third in this week's poll with 414 points. San Jose State was ranked seventh last week.

The ranking is the second time the Spartans have been ranked third in the NSCAA poll in head coach Gary St. Clair's tenure. San Jose State was ranked third for two weeks during the 1998 season.

In the Soccer Times top 25 poll, San Jose State jumped six spots to number seven (7).

The Spartans moved up two notches to 12th in this week's Soccer America top 20 ranking. . In the College Soccer News media top 20, the Spartans remained in the 19th spot for the second straight week.

Spartans in the NSCAA regional ranking: In this week's NSCAA Far West regional ranking, San Jose State moved up one spot and is now ranked first in the regional poll. The Spartans were ranked second in the region the past two weeks.

Humphreys receives weekly honor: San Jose State goalkeeper Chris Humphreys was named the Player of the Week by for the week of Oct. 2-8. Humphreys recorded his eighth combined shutout of the season in Sunday's 2-0 victory over Santa Clara, and allowed one goal in a 2-1 win over Saint Mary's last Thursday.

Humphreys in the record book: With Sunday's shutout, his eighth combined shutout of the season, Chris Humphreys moved into a second place tie in the SJSU record book for single-season shutouts. He is tied with Paul Coffee, who recorded eight shutouts during the 1979 season. The San Jose State record is nine, set by Rick Habenicht in 1968. Humpheys is fourth in career shutouts with 12.

Humphreys tops in GAA: Chris Humphreys is the NCAA Division 1 and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leader in Goals Against Average. In 11 games he has given up two goals for a 0.19 average.

Martinez among national scoring leaders: Jorge Martinez is fifth in the NCAA Division 1 national statistics in points per game. In 11 games, he has scored 11 goals and recorded 8 assists for a 2.73 per game average. In goals per game, he is tied for 12th in the national statistics, and he is tied for eighth in assists per game. Martinez leads the MPSF in all three categories.

Lyssand among assists leaders: Lars Lyssand is tied for 16th in the NCAA Division 1 national statistics in assists. He has seven assists in 11 games for a 0.64 average. Lyssand is second (behind Jorge Martinez) in the MPSF Mountain Division in assists.

Team statistical notes: San Jose State is the winningest NCAA Division 1 program this season. The Spartans have a .955 winnning percentage (10 wins, no losses and one tie). San Jose State also has the longest unbeaten streak among NCAA Division 1 teams.

San Jose State is tied for first in the NCAA Division 1 national statistics in Goals Against Average. The Spartans have allowed three goals in 11 games for a 0.26 average.

Last week: San Jose State won two non-conference games last week at Spartan Stadium, defeating Saint Mary's 1-0 on Thursday and handing rival Santa Clara a 2-0 loss on Sunday.

Lars Lyssand scored with six minutes left in the second half to lift the Spartans to the win over Saint Mary's. Ryan Suarez was credited with an assist on the play.

After a scoreless first half, Frank Sanfilippo put the Spartans in front 1-0 at the 58:12 mark with the assist to Jorge Martinez. Saint Mary's tied the score about five minutes later, scoring on a free kick.

On Sunday, Suarez and Isaias Bardales each scored a goal in SJSU's 2-0 win over Santa Clara. Suarez retrieved his own deflected shot and scored, while Bardales scored after the Santa Clara goalkeeper kicked the ball into the back of a teammate. Martinez was credited with an assist on Suarez' goal.

Spartan goalkeeper Chris Humphreys recorded his seventh solo and eighth combined shutout of the season in Sunday's win.

Head Coach Gary St. Clair : Gary St. Clair is in his 11th season as San Jose State's head coach. His career record is 95-96-14 (.497).
