SAN JOSE - San Jose State goalkeeper Chris Humphreys recorded his eighth combined shutout of the season, and Ryan Suarez and Isaias Bardales each scored a goal as the seventh-ranked Spartans defeated Santa Clara University, 2-0, Sunday night at Spartan Stadium.
San Jose State improved to 10-0-1, while Santa Clara now stands at 5-5.
Suarez put the Spartans on the board at the 53:01 mark when he took a pass from Jorge Martinez on the right side about six yards from the goal. His first shot was deflected by Bronco goalkeeper Rusty Johnson. The rebound went back to Suarez, who connected on his second attempt. The goal was the second of the season for Suarez, while Martinez was credited with his team-high eighth assist.
San Jose State clinched the victory at the 79:02 mark. Johnson's kick hit the back of a teammate near the top of the goal box. The ball was recovered by Bardales, whose shot found the right side of the net.
"This is a very big rival for us. Our players played very well," commented San Jose State head coach Gary St. Clair. "You can throw out the rankings, you can throw out the records, this is a big rivalry.
"This was an important win for us," St. Clair said.
Humphreys, who had three saves in the game, is now tied for second for single-season combined shutouts with Paul Coffee, who recorded eight shutouts during the 1979 season. The San Jose State record is nine, set by Rick Habenicht in 1968. Humpheys is fourth in career shutouts with 12.
The Spartans return to Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action Thursday with a Mountain Division game at Fresno State. The kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
