San Jose, Calif. The Spartans came away with their third straight victory as they defeated the Hornets of Sacramento State, 2-1, on Sunday night, Oct. 7. San Jose State men’s soccer claimed their first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation victory on a free kick by freshman Efrain Burgos, Jr.
The game-winning goal came at the 71:56 mark of the game on a free kick by Burgos, Jr. The rookie found the back of the net on a free kick from the left side of the box. The midfielder’s shot deflected off the foot of the Hornets’ Emmanuel Ochoa and sailed over the head of Sacramento State’s goalkeeper, Ryan Kenny, for the win.
Edward Murillo-Jimenez gave the Spartans an early lead in the first half with the first goal of his collegiate career. Murillo-Jimenez found the back right corner of the net on a long shot from beyond the midfield. The sophomore’s shot was launched from 10 yards behind the midline and sailed into the lower right corner of the Hornets’ goal.
The Hornets tied the score at 1-1 at the 7:54 mark of the second half. Adam Owens settled a serve from Fernando Cabadas and took a shot that deflected to the lower right corner. The ball rolled over the line, tying the game at one.
The game was an aggressive one on both sides. A total of 23 fouls were committed and three yellow cards given.
In goal, junior Lewis Sweeney claimed his third victory of the season. The goalkeeper made three saves in the game. The Hornets’ keeper, Kenny, recorded six saves against the Spartans’ offense.
San Jose State will be in action again on Friday, Oct. 12 against No. 22 New Mexico at 1:00 p.m. on Spartan Field.
