SAN JOSE - Lars Lyssand scored in the 85th minute to lift 7th-ranked San Jose State University to a 2-1 non-conference men's soccer victory over Saint Mary's College Thursday night at Spartan Stadium.
Lyssand took a pass on the left side from Ryan Suarez and his shot found the net in the lower right corner. Lyssand has now scored a goal in three straight games. Suarez recorded his first assist of the year.
"We played awfully well," said Spartan head coach Gary St. Clair, whose team improved to 9-0-1 overall. "We didn't hit a couple of shots that would've put it away early.
"This is what the rest of the season will be like. We just need to rise to the occasion," St. Clair said.
San Jose State took a 1-0 lead at the 58:12 mark. Frank Sanfilippo scored on a header on a pass from Jorge Martinez. The goal was the second this season for Sanfilippo. Martinez has seven assists.
Saint Mary's (3-7-0 overall) tied the score on Alex Avina's free kick. The kick curled into the right side of the net just past the outstretched arms of SJSU goalkeeper Chris Humpheys.
The Spartans return to action Sunday with a 7:30 p.m. non-conference game against Santa Clara at Spartan Stadium.
