“It was a tough, tough game,” Spartan head coach Gary St. Clair said. “We knew that this team would try to outmuscle us, but this is just a game where you’re glad it’s over and glad it’s in the win column.”
The Argos scored first at 22:40 on a goal by Andres Caballero, going one-on-one with Spartan goalkeeper Brent Douglas. Nick Hooper was credited with the assist.
“The performance was poor and I told them that at halftime,” St. Clair said. “This is not an easy team to play, especially when the wind is blowing so hard and the field is extremely hard, too. Conditions are a great equalizer.”
Facing the possible upset, the Spartans came back late in the second half. Johnny Gonzalez scored on a shot that hit off the crossbar and went in at 79:37, with assists from Marvin Sorto and Dan Oka. Sorto scored at 86:51 after a through ball allowed him to go one-on-one against the Argo goalie. The goal was assisted by Gonzalez and Oka and allowed the Spartans to avoid overtime or a tie.
“We wanted somebody to step up and do something, and those two guys did it,” St. Clair said of his two seniors’ goals.
The Spartans take on Sacramento State to open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action on Sunday, Oct. 9, at Spartan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
