Gary St. Clair

Gary St. Clair is in his 12th season as the San Jose State University men’s soccer coach. St. Clair has revitalized a Spartan program that stagnated in the late 80’s.
St. Clair enters the 2001 season with a 105-97-14 coaching record at the major college level. Five of his teams have posted winning records including a 20-1-1 record last season, a 14-6-1 record in 1998, a 10-win season in 1996 and a 15-4 mark in 1994. His first winning season was in 1993 when San Jose State had a 9-7-2 record. It was the first time in 10 years that SJSU had a winning record.

St. Clair’s 2000 squad set a school record for wins in a season and was ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA national poll for four weeks, the first time since 1969 the Spartans have been the top-ranked team in a poll. The squad was undefeated during the regular season and advanced to the the NCAA Tournament. He was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation’s Mountain Division Coach of the Year and the NSCAA/adidas Far West Region Coach of the Year.

St. Clair’s 1998 squad was ranked as high as third nationally during the season and made the school’s first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1976. The 1994 team was ranked as high as 19th during the regular season. Following the 1994 season, St. Clair was named a regional Coach of the Year.

St. Clair spent seven seasons at West Valley College in Saratoga, Calif., before returning to his alma mater. At the junior college level, his teams posted a 75-21-4 record with three Bay Valley and one Golden Gate Conference championships. He began his coaching career at San Jose’s Leland High School and compiled an 89-16-9 record. Five of his six teams won league championships.

A 1976 San Jose State graduate, St. Clair earned his master’s degree from Saint Mary’s College (Calif.) in 1984. St. Clair was a goalkeeper for the 1970 through 1973 Spartan teams. He currently is tied for the school’s career record for most shutouts with 18. St. Clair was a two-time all-conference and three-time All-West Coast selection.

After his college career, he played professionally in the North American Soccer League. St. Clair was a first-round draft pick by the Dallas Tornado in 1975. He played for the San Jose Earthquakes in 1976 and San Diego Jaws in 1977. St. Clair was selected to the 1976 U.S. Olympic team.
