Spartans Soccer Continue Homestand With Two Non-League Games

This week: San Jose State University's men's soccer team wraps up a four-game homestand this week with a pair of non-conference games. The Spartans host Saint Mary's College on Thursday and Santa Clara University on Sunday. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.

Radio coverage: KSJS, 90.5 FM, will be broadcasting Sunday's game against Santa Clara live.

SJSU Records: San Jose State is 8-0-1 overall. The Spartans are 2-0 in the Mountain Division of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.

The opponents: Saint Mary's is 3-6-0 overall, while Santa Clara is 5-3 on the season. Both are 0-0 in the West Coast Conference.

Series records: The Spartans hold an 11-8 advantage in the all-time series against Saint Mary's. This is the first meeting between the two teams since the 1998 season, when San Jose State won 1-0 in overtime.

San Jose State has a 17-16-1 lead in the all-time series against Santa Clara. Santa Clara won last year's game, 2-0.

Spartans in the nationally rankings: San Jose State is ranked in the top 20 in four separate polls this week.

The Spartans continued their climb in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) coaches Top 25 poll. The Spartans are ranked seventh in this week's poll with 312 points. This is the fourth straight week San Jose State has been ranked in the poll. The Spartans were ninth in last week's poll, 24th in the Sept. 11th poll and 19th in the Sept. 18th poll.

San Jose State moved into the Top 20 for the first time this week in the NSCAA media poll. The Spartans are ranked 19th. SJSU received votes in the media poll the past two weeks.

San Jose State moved up 12 spots to 13th in this week's Soccer Times top 25 coaches poll. The Spartans were ranked 25th last week.

San Jose State is 14th in this week's Soccer America poll. The Spartans were ranked 19th last week.

Spartans in the regional rankings: San Jose State remained in second place in this week's NSCAA Far West regional ranking. This is the third straight week the Spartans have been ranked second, after being ranked seventh in the first regional ranking of the season.

Martinez leads in scoring: Senior midfielder Jorge Martinez is the NCAA Division 1 and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation leader in points per game. He has scored 28 points in San Jose State's nine games for a 3.11 per game average. He leads the MPSF and is fourth in the NCAA statistics in goals scored, with 11 (1.22 per game).

Martinez is also second in the MPSF and is tied for 20th in the NCAA in assists. He has six assists this season for a 0.67 per game average.

More on Martinez: Martinez scored four goals and had one assist for nine points in San Jose State's season-opening 8-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Sept. 1. The nine points is the most by one player in an NCAA Division 1 game this season. He is one of three players this season to score four goals in a game.

Lyssand tops in assists: Lars Lyssand is the MPSF leader in assists. He has seven assists this season, a 0.78 average. He is tied for fifth in the NCAA statistics in assists per game.

Lyssand is also tied for third in the MPSF in scoring, with 11 points.

Humphreys leads goalkeepers: Chris Humphreys leads the MPSF and NCAA Division 1 goalkeepers in Goals Against Average. He has a 0.11 GAA (one goal in nine games played).

Humphreys also leads the MPSF with six solo shutouts, and is second in the MPSF's Mountain Division with 23 saves.

In the San Jose State record book, Humphreys is tied for third for single season shutouts, with seven. He is fourth in career shutouts with 11.

Spartan team notes: San Jose State's nine-game unbeaten streak is among the second longest among NCAA Division 1 teams. The Spartans are tied for third in the nation in winning percentage, at .944.

Head Coach Gary St. Clair : Gary St. Clair is in his 11th season as San Jose State's head coach. His career record is 93-96-14 (.492).
