Men's soccer wins MPSF opener over Sacramento State, 1-0

Sacramento, Calif. - Colby Moore scored his second career goal at the 18:22 mark, and the stingy Spartan defense did the rest, as San Jose State won its 2006 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 1-0, at Sacramento State on Sunday, October 1.

“I am very pleased with how our players responded today,” said head coach Gary St. Clair. “It’s always good to get a win in conference play, and for it to be a shutout on the road is great. Hopefully, it sets the tone for the rest of our conference schedule.”

Moore scored on a one-timer, his third shot in the first 18 minutes of play, when Gavin Wenyon tipped a long volley from Ed Brand to the foot of Moore, who fired just inside the near post.

The lone goal would be enough for the Spartans, as Brand and the rest of the defense held the Hornets to just five shots in the match, including just one shot in the first half. Richard Mann earned his third shutout of the season in net, stopping both shots he saw from the Hornets, including a save in the 90th minute.

“We played nine freshmen and sophomores today in a tough environment,” said St. Clair. “We had some more chances that we would have liked to have capitalized on, but Ed Brand was a great leader on defense, and Diego Soto was excellent in winning balls in midfield for us.”

The Spartans earn three points for the conference victory and improve their record to 4-4-1 overall, 1-0 in MPSF play. They will next travel to Albuquerque, N.M., to face the No. 12-ranked University of New Mexico Lobos on Friday, October 6. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MDT.
