Men's soccer drops MPSF opener to Denver, 3-1

Denver, Colo.-----James Merriman assisted on the game-winning goal and added an insurance tally in a 5:01 span midway through the first half as the University of Denver defeated San Jose State University, 3-1, in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation conference men's soccer opener for both teams.

All of the scoring occurred in a 16:10 span of the first half. Denver’s Christian Bowers opened the scoring at the 12:35 mark. Tim McKinney scored the Spartans’ only goal of the game at 14:14 with assists from Johnny Gonzalez and Dylan Pender.

Travis Hendricks’ goal at 23:44 proved to be the difference with Merriman getting credit for an assist. Merriman’s goal at 28:45 was the final score of the game.

Daniel Benton of San Jose State (1-6-1, 0-1 MPSF) had a busy afternoon making nine saves. Matt Bredehoft of Denver (4-2-1, 1-0 MPSF) was credited with three saves.

The Spartans, winless in their last six games and still searching for the school’s 500th all-time victory, return to action, Sunday, October 3, at the Air Force Academy. Start time for the MPSF match is 11:00 a.m. (PDT).
