San Jose, Calif. - A stingy Cal Poly defense stopped the San Jose State men's soccer team 3-0 on Tuesday night. Two Mustang goals were scored within 40 seconds of each other early in the first half. It was just the first road loss of the season for the Spartans.
Cal Poly scored its first goal nearly 12 minutes into the contest, when Julian Alvarez received a far crossing pass from Jose Garcia and put it behind Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann at the 11:55 mark. Alvarez assisted on another goal moments later, when Jeff Meyer Jr. scored on a counterattack up the near side of the field at 12:35 of the match.
The Spartans shored up their defense the remainder of the first half, and kept the Mustangs in check for the final 32 minutes of the period. Mann made two of his three saves in the first half of play.
SJSU showed its grit coming out of halftime, as they put three shots around the Mustang cage in the second half, including a shot on goal by Diego Soto.
Unfortunately, this night belonged to the Mustangs, as their defense held the Spartans to just four shots in the match.
The Mustangs added another insurance goal in the final minute, when Garcia scored on an assist from Max Kaufman at the 89:07 mark.
The Spartans will continue their season long road swing on Sunday afternoon when they open MPSF play at Sacramento State. Kick-off time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
