Santa Clara, Calif.----A second half surge fell short for San Jose State, losing to Santa Clara on Friday night, September 24, 2-1. The Broncos snapped a two-game losing streak improving to 3-4 for the season while the Spartans' fell to 5-3.
San Jose State controlled procession early in the first half with a shot on goal in the 3:54 mark. Junior Oscar Yniguez muscled a shot from twenty yards outside the box hitting the right corner post. Yniguez's shot proved to be the lone shot on goal for the Spartans in the first half. The Broncos fired back in the 20th minute with a header off the corner. Junior Mykell Bates was credited with the goal while junior Brandon Zimmerman got the assist.
Before the half, Broncos' Harrison Hanley collected a deflected ball in the box and one-timed it past Spartan goalkeeper Rene Martinez making it 2-0. The Spartans ended the first half outnumbered, 6-1, in shots.
San Jose State showed promise in the second half with six shots on goal. In the 80th minute junior Roberto Casteneda blasted a rocket past goalkeeper Kevin Klasila making the score 2-1. The Spartans couldn't come up with the equalizer with ten minutes remaining.
"I'm really proud of the way we (SJSU) played in the second half, head coach Gary St. Clair stated. "Unfortunately, we fell short, but our guys showed promise coming out from halftime. Santa Clara played well and we need to match them on the field which we didn't do in the first."
Goalkeeper Rene Martinez made four saves in his first loss of the season (2-1).
The Spartans come home on Sunday, September 26 to face nearby rival San Francisco (2-3-1). Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
