San Jose, Calif.---Daniel Perez had the only goal for the Spartans (3-2-2) in their 2-1 lost to Cal Poly (4-4) Sunday, Sept. 25 at Spartan Field. Dan Oka and Gavin Wenyon were credited with assists when Perez headed the ball past Mustang goalkeeper Jeremy Coupe at 14:06.
The Mustangs didn’t go away in the second half, though, and came back to tie the game when Justin Woodward scored on a penalty kick at 54:46. Matthew Robinson sealed the game for Cal Poly when he scored on a shot into the upper left corner of the net at 61:11. Jason Hadley was credited with the assist.
“This was a game of two halves,” said Spartan assistant coach Chris Behler. “Just because you perform in the first half doesn’t mean you’re going to perform in the second half. Effort-wise, it was probably our worst performance of the year so far.”
After being undefeated until their 3-1 loss to USF Friday, Sept. 23, the Spartans have now lost two games in a row.
“You have to take each game one at a time,” Behler said. “You have to play every game like it’s your last and treat every opponent like your toughest opponent.”
Daniel Perez said his team definitely played differently in each of the halves.
“I felt comfortable in the first half,” Perez said. “The ref influenced the game, but we were the ones playing and we have to take the responsibility.”
The Spartans take on local rival Santa Clara Thursday, Sept. 29 at Spartan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7 p.m.
