Moraga, Calif. - The San Jose State University men’s soccer team fell 2-1 to the Gaels of Saint Mary’s on Sunday, Sept. 23. The Spartans attempted a late rally with a goal in the 80th minute of play, but were unable to overcome the 2-0 Gael lead. The loss drops San Jose State’s record to 3-4-0 on the season while the Gaels improve to 4-2.
“We are struggling to execute what we want to do right now,” said head coach Gary St. Clair. “Over the course of a long season, you go through patches like this. We are giving away too many soft goals. When you run into a physical team (like Saint Mary's), sometimes, this happens. Now we'll just go home, get ready for the next match, and turn this thing around.”
Saint Mary’s opened the match with a goal in the 19th minute. Bryan VanDoorninck put away a perfectly set up ball by junior Justin Kim and sophomore Dylan Leslie. Kim raced down the far sideline and made a short pass to Leslie, who then slipped the ball across the box to the far-post run of VanDoornick.
The Gaels added to their lead on a set play from 35 yards out by David Blanchard. Senior Erik Robert placed a perfect service to the oncoming run of Blanchard, who headed the ball in to give SMC a 2-0 lead in the 64th minute.
The Spartans had several scoring opportunities in the first half. Their first shot came in the sixth minute. Efrain Burgos, Jr. took his first of three shots and the bail sailed wide to the left. Junior Sam Shore took the next shot that just went wide to the right.
In the 29th minute, Ismael Ibarra took a shot that deflected, earning a corner kick. On the corner kick by Gavin Wenyon, Ed Brand connected on a header at the back post that was saved by goalkeeper Keenan Flynn. Wenyon was involved in another close play in the 34th minute. Wenyon crossed the ball from the left to find Shore open on the right. Shore’s shot was saved by the right post of the goal.
With 15 seconds left in the half, Burgos, Jr., took a shot from the right side of the penalty box that was deflected by a defender and went just wide.
The Spartans finally got on the board in the 80th minute with a goal by senior Julio Gonzalez. A through ball by Ricky Dorrego gave Gonzalez a one-on-one play against Flynn and the senior slipped the into the goal for the Spartan’s lone goal of the game.
Both teams tallied 13 shots in the game. The Spartans had eight shots in the first half and five in the final half.
San Jose State will be in action again on Wednesday, Sept. 26 against Cal State Bakerfield. The game time and location have been changed from the original schedule. The game is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Spartan Field.
