San Jose, Calif.------Johnny Gonzalez took advantage of Santa Clara University goalkeeper Steve Cronin being out of position and scored an empty net goal at 64:19 as San Jose State University handed the Broncos their first loss of the season, 2-1, in a non-conference men’s soccer game.

The Spartans (3-1-1), playing their first game in two weeks, took an early lead on a Randy Poggio goal at 6:00. Frank Sanfilippo was credited with the assist.

Santa Clara (6-1-2), which had not given up more than one goal in its last 14 games dating back to last October, got on the scoreboard at 87:23 when Audren Cashman scored off a throw in by Matt Upton.

"They (the Spartans) played their hearts out. It was a tremendous effort from beginning to end. The performance was outstanding and the win is what you look for," said San Jose State coach Gary St. Clair about the Broncos who are ranked between six and ten in most nationally-recognized polls.

"The defense set the tone of the game. Santa Clara’s goal came very late on a questionable call. Our players played extremely well."

Shots were even at 11-11 and San Jose State goalkeeper Eddie Dominguez made two saves. Santa Clara’s Cronin made four.

San Jose State returns to action Friday evening when it hosts CS Sacramento in a 7:00 p.m. non-conference game in Spartan Stadium.
