LOS ANGELES - Jorge Martinez scored both San Jose State University goals and goalkeeper Chris Humphreys recorded his fifth shutout of the season as the Spartans defeated Loyola Marymount 2-0 in the first round of the LMU Fall Classic today (Thursday).
The Spartans, ranked 19th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America top 25 poll, are 6-0 overall. LMU slipped to 4-3.
Martinez scored his first goal 10:06 into the game. His second goal came with 20 minutes left in regulation. Both goals were assisted by Isaias Bardales.
The goals were the eighth and ninth goals of the season for Martinez, who leads San Jose State with 23 points.
Humphreys has not allowed a goal in 495 minutes of playing time this season. He now is eighth in single season shutouts, with five, and moved into a tie for sixth in career shutouts with nine.
After a season-opening 8-1 victory over CS San Bernardino, the Spartans have not allowed a goal in five consecutive games. That is the second longest shutout streak in school history; the record is seven straight shutouts in 1971.
The Spartans conclude action at the LMU tournament Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. game against Loyola University-Chicago.
