San Jose, Calif.-----Sophomore midfielder Steven Sanchez scored the game-winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in the game to lead San Jose State to a 2-1 win over Loyola Marymount Sunday, September 19. The Spartans improve to 5-2 for the season and the Lions fall to 3-2-1.
The Spartans got off to an early start, scoring just minutes into the first. Junior Oscar Yniguez took a pass from the outside and dribbled the ball through the box where it got lost in the crowd. Yniguez managed to find the ball and one-kicked it through the fingertips of goalkeeper Billy Thompson. Yniguez was credited with his first goal of the season at the 2:40 mark.
San Jose State controlled the pace in the first, but had difficulties capitalizing on the opportunities, missing just wide or high on several chances. Thomas made one save in the first, while Spartan goalkeeper Rene Martinez made four.
Moments after the half, junior Roberto Casteneda was charged a yellow card that setup a penalty kick fifteen yards from the goal. Senior Rafael Baca took the shot and kicked it through the bottom left, scoring the equalizing goal.
The turning point in the game came at the 52:34 mark when Lions' junior Alex Greenman was charged a red card for an intentional trip. With a one-man advantage, the Spartans continued to strike. With less than three minutes remaining, Sanchez received the ball off a deflection in the corner. Sanchez took it in the box and knocked it past Thompson for the game-winning goal. Moments later, Sanchez was charged for a yellow card for excessive cheering while time ran out ending the game.
"It feels unbelievable to score the game-winning goal," stated Sanchez after the game. "You don't get many opportunities in games like this. This is my first goal of my career and when it first happened it didn't feel like it was real. The team needed it the most and that's what counts."
Spartan goalkeeper Rene Martinez (2-0) picked up the win.
San Jose State hits the road to face Santa Clara on Friday, September 24 at 5:30 p.m. The Spartans then come home to host San Francisco on Sunday, September 26 at 7:30 p.m.
