SPARTANS FACE #15 SANTA CLARA FRIDAY NIGHT
San Jose State will play just one game this week, travelling to face #15 Santa Clara. The game will be played at Buck Shaw Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
This week’s match with the Broncos of Santa Clara is the annual ‘Rivalry Series’ match with Santa Clara. Santa Clara and San Jose State started the series in 2002 and compete against each other in 13 different sports.
ANOTHER RANKED TEAM
Friday’s tilt with Santa Clara marks the third ranked team the Spartans will have play so far this season. San Jose State is 0-2 against ranked teams in 2006. They fell 2-0 to #10 USF and #17 California. Defending MPSF champion New Mexico will face the Spartans twice in the month of October.
BRAND AMONG LEADERS IN MPSF
With his two goal performance against Notre Dame de Namur, sophomore defender Ed Brand vaulted near the top in the MPSF stats. He is fourth in overall scoring, and tied for second with eight other players with two goals scored. For his efforts against the Argos, Brand was nominated for MPSF ‘Player of the Week’.
ON THE ROAD AGAIN
The game this Friday with Santa Clara will mark the start of a season long five-game road stretch for the Spartans. They will open MPSF play on the road swing, playing at Sacramento State on Sunday, October 1. The road trip will end on October 8, with a MPSF match at UNLV.

Santa Clara comes into Friday night’s match ranked #15 in the latest Soccer America poll. The Broncos are coming off two straight defeats by UCLA and Cal State Northridge.
Player to Watch: Junior midfielder Peter Lowery. Lowery leads the Broncos with four goals and eight points, leading the team to a 4-2-1 record through seven games.
Head Coach Cameron Rast: Rast is in his fifth year as head coach at Santa Clara. He is fourth on the school’s all-time wins list.
Last Meeting: The #8 ranked Broncos defeated the Spartans, 2-0, in Spartan Stadium on September 29, 2005.
