San Jose, Calif.----San Jose State fell victim to Saint Mary's College, falling 2-0. After a scoreless first-half where the Gaels were outshot 7-1, Saint Mary's would go on to outshoot the Spartans 10-6 in the second-half.
The Gaels broke a scoreless tie in the second half at the 61:23 mark. Junior Tom Mohoric took a header off of senior goalkeeper Jonathan Lester's save, knocking it in towards the left post nearly eight yards out. The Spartans were quick to respond pushing the attack, looking for the equalizer.
Junior Oscar Yniguez nearly tied the game with a rocket at the 86:40 mark, but the ball soured over the head of junior goalkeeper Doug Herrick. Freshman Nick Marshall later received a cross from Ismail Adam, 13 seconds later, hitting inside the far left post to go up 2-0.
"When you lose 2-0 at home it is a major disappointment. They (St.Mary's) are a good team. The margins are really thin between winning and losing and tonight we didn't get the break we usual do, stated head coach Gary St. Clair. "I am confident our team will bounce back Sunday (September 19). We win as a team, we lose as a team. We have done extremely well, but sometime it's just the nature of this game."
Lester played the full 90 minutes making 4 saves and Herrick grabbed 6 saves in the shut-out.
San Jose State (4-2) returns to action on Sunday, September 19, to face Loyola Marymount (3-1) at Spartan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 1:00 p.m.
