San Jose, Calif.---Ismael Ibarra scored his second goal of the season and Dan Oka capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity to give the Spartans (3-0-2) a 2-0 victory over UC Riverside (3-2-1), Friday, September 16.

Ibarra’s goal came at 36:56 when he headed the ball off a corner kick from Gavin Wenyon. Oka came through on the penalty kick at 82:48 to all but assure the Spartans the win and keep them undefeated in 2005.

“Things weren’t going right early on, but when the goal came, we got pumped up,” Ibarra said. “We gained some confidence, and did what we had to do.”

Oka was excited to help his team seal the win.

“It felt awesome,” Oka said. “It’s been long waiting. It was kind of a rough game. We are a lot better than how we played, but we found a way to win.”

Despite the win, head coach Gary St. Clair said his team still has room for improvement.

“I was disappointed with our performance,” said St. Clair. “We won, but I thought we played down to (UC Riverside’s) level. That was probably our worst performance of the year so far. If we are going to generate some noise this season, we need to play better.”

San Jose State goalkeeper Brent Douglas got the win for the Spartans, credited with three saves on the night and recorded his first collegiate shut-out.

San Jose State continues its non-conference schedule, Friday, September 23 at the University of San Francisco at 7:00 p.m.
