Santa Clara uses "own goal" for 2-1 men's soccer win over San Jose State

Santa Clara, Calif.-----San Jose State University defenseman Chris Mackey was involved in the final two goals of the adidas Classic men’s soccer match against Santa Clara University.

His feed to teammate Johnny Gonzalez set up the Spartans’ only goal at the 17:48 mark of the first half. Unfortunately, one of his attempts to clear a Santa Clara shot went past San Jose State goalkeeper Daniel Benton into the net which resulted in a 2-1 Bronco win in an adidas Classic contest.

Santa Clara (5-0) took a quick lead as Ryan Purtell scored off of a Bronco corner kick at 5:40.

San Jose State (1-4), which has lost three in row, ended a scoring drought that lasted more than two games with Gonzalez’ first goal of the season.

The Spartans conclude play in the adidas Classic when they face the University of San Francisco, Saturday, October 18, at Buck Shaw Stadium. Game time is 5:00 p.m.
