SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Jorge Martinez scored two goals and Chris Humphreys recorded his fourth shutout of the season, leading San Jose State to a 3-0 win over Sacramento State Sunday in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Mountain Division opener for both teams Sunday.
The 24th-ranked Spartans are now 5-0 overall, 1-0 in the MPSF Mountain Division.
Tony Chang scored San Jose State's first goal 13:50 into the game, on an assist from Lars Lyssand. Martinez scored at 27:45 and 40:06 of the first half. Chang and Frank Sanfilippo were credited with assists on the first Martinez goal, and Lyssand had the assist on the final SJSU goal.
Martinez leads the Spartans with 18 points on seven goals and four assists.
Humphreys, who had two saves in the game, has not allowed a goal in 4 1/2 games played this season. (He also played the first half of San Jose State's season-opening 8-1 victory over Cal State San Bernardino.) He is tied for eighth in combined shutouts for a season, with four, and for a career, with eight.
San Jose State returns to action on Thursday, Sept. 21, when they meet
Loyola Marymount in the first round of the Loyola Marymount Tournament
in Los Angeles. The game begins at 3:00 p.m.
