Irvine, Calif. - Following a two goal comeback in the second half, the San Jose State men's soccer team fell to the No. 20 Anteaters of UC Irvine, 3-2, in overtime on September 16. The loss drops the Spartans' record to 3-2-0 on the season while the Anteaters improve to 5-0.
UC Irvine took the early lead with a goal by Gary Bailey in the 11th minute of play. Bailey headed in a cross from teammate Brandon Foster. The Anteaters extended their lead to 2-0 in the 54th minute. Bailey picked up an assist as he threw in a ball to Amani Walker who found an open Spencer Thompson inside the box.
San Jose State rallied to tie the game in the second half. Senior Ismael Ibarra scored his second goal of the weekend at the 56:42 mark. The forward took a loose ball in the box and put it in the net to cut the Spartans' lead to within one.
Sophomore Colby Moore tied the game at 2-2 in the 70th minute as he took control of a misplayed ball in the box and found the back of the net.
The game-winner came on an own goal by the Spartans at the 94:21 mark. Bailey threw in the ball for the Anteaters and it was headed backwards by a San Jose State defenseman to end the game at 3-2.
The Spartans started newcomer Lewis Sweeney in goal. Sweeney made two saves for San Jose State. UC Irvine's goalkeeper Pat Barton made four saves on the day.
San Jose State will be in action again in its home-opener against non-conference rival Santa Clara on Thursday, September 20. The game is set for 7:00 p.m. at Spartan Stadium.
