Men's Soccer Blanks UC Riverside

Riverside, Calif. The San Jose State University men’s soccer team defeated the Highlanders of UC Riverside, 3-0, on Friday, September 14. Seniors Julio Gonzalez and Ismael Ibarra and freshman Efrain Burgos, Jr. each notched their second goals of the season to lead the Spartans in the shutout. Junior goalkeeper Richard Mann made four saves in the game to record his third win of the season. The win improves San Jose State’s record to 3-1-0 on the season while the Highlanders fall to 3-2-0.

“It was our best performance of the season so far,” said head coach Gary St. Clair. “We have scored the first goal in every game we’ve been in and it was nice to follow that up with the next goal as well.”

The Spartans opened the game with a goal by Gonzalez at the 23:19 mark of the first half. Ricky Dorrego earned his second assist of the season as he found an open Gonzalez who beat the keeper to his right side.

UC Riverside played an aggressive first half, taking three shots on goal. Mann’s defensive efforts earned him his 10th individual shutout.

San Jose State expanded its lead at the 65:00 minute mark on a free kick by Burgos, Jr.. The rookie found the back of the net from just outside the 18-yard box to bring the score to 2-0.

Ibarra notched the Spartans’ final goal of the game at 79:08. The senior settled a long pass from classmate Savio Carrijo and beat the Highlander keeper to his right side.

The Spartans will be in action again on Sunday, September 16 at UC Irvine. The game is slated for 2:00 p.m.
