Men's Soccer Preview

The San Jose State men's soccer team (4-1) heads back home this weekend hosting Saint Mary's College (3-1-1), Thursday, September 16 and Loyola Marymount (3-1), Sunday, September 19.  Thursday's match against the Gaels is slated for 7:00 p.m. and Sunday against the Lions at 1:00 p.m.  Both games will be played at Spartan Stadium and gates will open 1 hour prior to the start of the match.  Tickets for each match are $5 for adults, $3 for youth (12 & under) and $1 for youth in jersey.  SJSU students get in for free with student ID.

SJSU-SMC Series

San Jose State holds a 16-9 advantage in the all-time series with Saint Mary's.  The two last met in '07 at Saint Mary's, the Spartans fell short, 2-1.  Before '07 the Spartans tallied six straight victories against the Gaels.

SJSU-LMU Series

San Jose State owns a 6-2-1 advantage against Loyola Marymount in the all-time series.  LMU currenty holds a 2-game win streak in the series.  The last time the two met in '03, the Spartans were edged in overtime, 2-1. A year before in 02', the Lions downed the Spartans, 3-1.  The Spartans, however, won the remaining six out of seven (one tie) dating back to '83.

San Jose State Captures Cal State Fullerton Tournament Title

The Spartans went 2-0 this weekend, September 16 & 19, to take first place in the Cal State Fullerton Men's Soccer Tournament.  Day One, the Spartans defeated host CS Fullerton, 1-0.  Early in the game, Junior Roberto Casteneda sent the corner to the near post where senior Nick Cukar touched it toward the far post.  Senior Josh Boemecke headed the ball into the top of the net, scoring the game's only goal. Day Two, San Jose State downed CS Northridge 3-1.  Boemecke scored one and freshman Ricky Martin tallied two.

Saint Mary's College

The Saint Mary's men's soccer team finished the 2009 season with their first ever trip to the NCAA Tournament and a school best 10 wins.  The Gaels went 10-5-5 in 2009.  Seniors' Dylan Leslie and Jordan Grider were named to the 2010 Preseason All-Conference Team.  Sophomore Trevor Newquist currently leads the team with six points and Junior Tom Mohoric trails with four.  Junior goalkeeper Doug Herrick averages 1.15 goals allowed per game.

Loyola Marymount

LMU men's soccer team has 19 letterwinners, nine starters, and eight all-conference players returning from last season's squad.  The Lion's made it to the NCAA Tournament last year with a 10-9-2 regular-season record.  Seniors' Rafael Baca and Vincent Ocampo are both placed on the Preseason All-WCC Team.  Junior Artur Jozkowicz and sophomore David Ponce are currently leading the team with four points each.  Junior goalkeeper Jack McCormack averages 1.00 goals allowed per game.
