Riverside, Calif. - San Jose State University fell to UC Riverside, 2-1, at UCR Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon, September 13.
Having dropped all four matches on a season-long four-game road stretch, the Spartans return home with a 1-4 overall record. Playing its 2009 home opener, UC Riverside snaps a nine-match losing skid dating back to 2008, and moves to 1-3.
The host Highlanders scored both of its goals over the first 20 minutes of the match. The opener came on a header by Normando Mariscal at 11:15, with teammate Tyler Wilson doubling the advantage with his first goal of 2009 as well, as he turned one in from inside the penalty box at 18:52, off a right-sided cross from Michael Galland.
San Jose State got one of those strikes back before the break, as sophomore midfielder Oscar Yniguez scored his second of the season, both now from free kicks, at the 29:23 mark.
The Spartans were out-shot, 10-5, however, in the second half, and could not find the tying goal. San Jose State played the final 5:51 a man down after sophomore defender Eric Angell was issued a red card.
UC Riverside held a 17-10 shot advantage for the match, led by Alexander Racca's four attempts off the bench. Wilson took three shots, while Mariscal had a pair, with two each on goal. Yniguez led the offensive effort for the Spartans with three shots, two on target.
Having served a one-game red-card suspension of his own, sophomore Jonathan Lester was back in the San Jose State goal. He made the five saves over the 90 minutes. Ryan Schmitz had four stops in the UCR net.
