Fullerton, Calif.---- Senior Josh Boemecke broke the ice and freshman Ricky Martin scored twice to lead San Jose State to a 3-1 victory over CSU Northridge, Sunday, September 12. The win claims the Spartans as the champion of the Cal State Fullerton Men's Soccer Tournament. San Jose State (4-1) went 2-0 in the tournament. The Spartans earlier defeated CSU Fullerton on Day 1, September 10, with a score of 1-0.
Boemecke scored his fifth goal of the young season in the 10th minute, taking a nifty pass from freshman Sam Hodgson that split two defenders. Boemecke then came in alone on sophomore goalkeeper Michael Abalos, beating him to the right of the net.
Five minutes later, Martin's first goal came in on a looping header from just inside the corner of the penalty box. The ball arched high and carried over Abalos' head to the upper right corner. Martin's second score made it 3-0 in the 29th minute. Junior Nick Cashmere's free kick from almost 50 yards out rattled around in a crowd before the senior midfielder Nick Cukar touched it to Martin, who had plenty of time to tee it up and beat Abalos again, from nearly the same spot in the box.
Head coach Gary St. Clair had these words after the victory. "I am very pleased with our performance in the tournament. On Friday, we held on, and today, we jumped ahead 3-0 in the first 30 minutes. Our players worked very hard and I am very proud of them and their overall performance."
The Matadors' finally scored its first goal of the season in the 33rd minute on a penalty kick by freshmen Sam Ball after sophomore Joe Franco had been fouled from behind in the box. CSU Northridge was denied on an earlier penalty kick when senior goalkeeper Jonathan Lester got to junior Camilo Rojas' shot low to the left post and batted it away.
Abalos finished with 4 saves while Lester made 5.
San Jose State (4-1) returns to action on Thursday, September 16, to face Saint Mary's (6-1) at Spartan Stadium. Kick-off is set for 7:00 p.m.
