MEN'S SOCCER: Nationally-Ranked Spartans on the Road for Two Games

This week: San Jose State University's men's soccer team plays a pair of road games this week. The Spartans are at USF (San Francisco) on Friday, September 15 for a 7:00 p.m. game, then is at Sacramento State on Sunday, September 17 for a 1:00 p.m. contest.

Last year San Jose State defeated Sacramento State, 3-1, in Sacramento, Calif., but lost to USF, 3-2 in overtime, at Spartan Stadium.

Spartans in the nationally rankings: San Jose State is ranked 24th in this week's National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) coaches Top 25 poll, released Monday. The Spartans are ranked 24th with 25 points. This week's ranking is the second of the season; the Spartans were not ranked in last week's poll. This is the first time San Jose State has been ranked since the 1998 season, when the Spartans were ranked as high as third.

Spartans in the regional rankings: San Jose State is ranked fourth in this week's NSCAA Far West regional rankings. The Spartans were ranked seventh last week in the first regional ranking of the season.

Head Coach Gary St. Clair: Gary St. Clair is in his 11th season as San Jose State's head coach. His career record is 88-96-13 (.478). Last season the Spartans finished with a 7-11-2 overall record, 4-6-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

Spartans join MPSF: San Jose State has joined the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation for men's soccer. The Spartans will compete in the Mountain Division of the MSPF. The other teams in the division are Air Force, University of Denver, Sacramento State and Fresno State. The Pacific Division includes UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Northridge, UNLV, New Mexico, Cal State Fullerton, Cal Poly, UC Irvine and San Diego State.

The top two teams from each division will advance to the conference playoffs, to be hosted by the Pacific Division champion. The first round of the playoffs will be held on Nov. 10 with the championship game on Nov. 12. The winner of the Nov. 12 game will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA playoffs.

Last week: San Jose State improved to 3-0 overall with a pair of wins. The Spartans defeated UC Santa Barbara, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 3, and recorded a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge on Friday, Sept. 8. Both games were at Spartan Stadium. The two games are non-league games because UC Santa Barbara and Cal State Northridge are in the Pacific Division of the MPSF.

Dan Fife and Isaias Bardales each scored a goal in the win over UC Santa Barbara. Fausto Villegas had the Spartans' only goal in Friday's victory. It was the second goal of the season for Bardales, and the first of the year for Fife and Villegas.

Jorge Martinez received an assist on the second goal against UC Santa Barbara and the only goal in Friday's game. He now has three assists, to go along with four goals, in SJSU's three games. Martinez, who leads the Spartans with 11 points, scored all four of his goals and had two assists in San Jose State's 8-1 win over Cal State San Bernardino to begin the season.

Spartan goalkeeper Chris Humphries recorded his first and second shutouts of the season in the two games, and now has six career shutouts. He has not allowed a goal in 2 1/2 games (225 minutes) played this season; he played the first half and did not allow a goal in San Jose State's win over Cal State San Bernardino.
