Fullerton, Calif.-----San Jose State kept Cal State Fullerton scoreless through the full 90 minutes, Day One of the Cal State Fullerton men's soccer tournament. The Spartans issued the Titans their first loss of the season Friday night, September 10. Knocking out their first road victory of the season, the Spartans came out victorious, 1-0. Senior midfielder Josh Boemecke scored the game's only goal in the 25th minute. Senior Jonathan Lester earned the shutout in goal, making one save.
The Spartans generated plenty of offense in the first half, totaling 6 shots. At 24:53, Boemecke gave the Spartans the lead and the game-winning goal. Junior Roberto Casteneda sent the corner to the near post where senior Nick Cukar touched it toward the far post. Titans' Junior goalkeeper Trevor Whiddon had no chance as Boemecke headed the ball into the top of the net. Boemecke cashed in a corner kick for his fourth goal in as many games this season for the Spartans.
The Titans had more scoring opportunities in the second half, outshooting the Spartans, 6-3, in the period, but Lester and the Spartan defense held firm to preserve the shutout. Lester had his only save in the second half.
"We played very good tonight," added head coach Gary St. Clair. "In a game, you're going to have your ups and your downs and we had both. Fullerton is a very difficult team, especially on the road. Our boys (SJSU) played very good from start to finish."
San Jose State improves to 3-1 while the Titans fall to 0-1-2.
The Spartans (3-1) will next face Cal State Northridge (0-2-1) on Sunday, September 12. The game will be video streamed via Big West TV (subscription, www.bigwest.org).
