Fullerton, Calif.---Johnny Gonzalez scored his first goal of 2005 at 84:44 to give the Spartans (2-0-2) a 2-2 tie with the Cal State Fullerton Titans (0-2-1) Sunday, September 11. The game went to overtime, but neither team was able to score in either of the two extra periods. It was the Spartans' third overtime game in their first four starts of the season.

The tying goal was unassisted as Gonzalez found a loose ball about 15 yards out and scored.

The Spartans were down by two goals early in the game after the Titans' Yaron Shlomi scored his first goal of the season off an assist from Jose Barragan. The second goal was scored after the Spartans' Gavin Wenyon mistakenly kicked a cross from the Titans' Jacob Shumway past Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann.

"This was our third game in five days and we were tired," head coach Gary St. Clair said. "They came out and were leading us early, which is what I'm sure they wanted to do."

Still, San Jose State kept coming and clawed its way back to a tie. First, Spartan Nelson Diaz rushed down the field and brought Fullerton goalkeeper Kevin Puder out of the goal. Diaz was able to get the ball to Daniel Perez, who scored at 42:37. San Jose State earned the tie when Gonzalez scored and the Spartans didn't capitalize on scoring opportunities in overtime.

"The real key was the character of this team," said St. Clair. "A lesser team would have folded, but in the end, we really should have won that game."

The Spartans return to action Friday, September 16, against UC Riverside at Spartan Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
