Stanford, Calif.-----Galen Thompson scored at the 79:13 mark of the second half giving Stanford University a 1-0 victory over San Jose State University in an opening round Cal/adidas men’s soccer tournament game.

Thompson’s goal was his first of the season for the Cardinal (2-0-1). Stanford goalkeeper Andrew Kartunen remained unscored on for the season making two saves.

San Jose State goalkeeper Daniel Benton was credited with three saves.

Spartan coach Gary St. Clair shook up his starting lineup again hoping to find the right combination. Randy Poggio and Dylan Pender returned to the starting lineup for Jose Flores and Johnny Gonzalez.

The Spartans return to action Sunday in their second game of the Cal/adidas Tournament when they the University of California in a 2:30 p.m. game at Berkeley’s Edwards Stadium. Sunday’s game will mark the team’s second attempt to notch San Jose State University’s 500th win in men’s soccer.
