Fullerton, Calif.---Nelson Diaz scored his second goal in as many games at 7:25 into the first overtime period Friday night to give the Spartans (2-0-1) a 1-0 victory over UC Irvine (1-1-1) in non-conference men's soccer action at Cal State Fullerton.

Gavin Wenyon and Johnnny Gonzalez were credited with assists on the sudden-victory goal. Spartan goalkeeper Richard Mann made four saves to log his second shutout of 2005. Anteater goalkeeper Ryan Mathy made three saves for UCI. The Anteaters outshot the Spartans, 13-9, but it was the goal in overtime that made the difference.

"It was a gutsy effort by our players," said head coach Gary St. Clair after the Spartans' second overtime game in its first three regular-season starts. "Our defense has really kept us in games and given us a chance to break through."

The Spartans will play their third game in five days when they take on Cal State Fullerton at 2 p.m. Sunday, September 11, in Fullerton, Calif.
