Men's Soccer Falls To Dons, 3-2

San Francisco, Calif. San Jose State opened west coast play with a 3-2 loss to the University of San Francisco on Sunday night, September 9. The Spartans battled with the Bay Area rivals through 90 minutes of aggressive play, but came out with their first loss of the season.

"I think it was a very competitive game," said head coach Gary St. Clair. "I think we learned a lot of things that will be helpful down the road. I honestly think we were the better team on the night, but the better team does not always win."

The Spartans opened the game with a goal at the 5:56 mark of the first half. Senior Julio Gonzalez settled a USF throw-in aimed back at goalkeeper Eric Conner, found the open net and tallied the Spartans’ first goal, unassisted.

Senior Ismael Ibarra nearly doubled San Jose State’s lead at the 20:44 mark on a breakaway. Ibarra beat the keeper on the right side and sailed the ball toward the open net, but his aim was just wide as the ball drifted wide of the net.

The Dons responded late in the half with two goals on free kicks. Daniel DeGeer scored both goals for San Francisco. The midfielder blasted the ball over the wall of Spartans into the right corner on both opportunities to give the Dons a 2-1 lead heading into intermission.

San Francisco opened the second half with an early goal to extend their lead to 3-1. At the 47:26 mark, Kyle Schlumpf scored off a corner kick by DeGeer.

The Spartans attempted a late-game rally with a goal at 86:54. Sophomore Colby Moore picked up a misplayed ball by Conner and found the back of the net for the Spartans. Moore was assisted on the play by freshman Ricky Dorrego. San Jose State attempted several attacks in the final minutes of play, but were unable to capitalize.

San Jose State will be back in action on Sept. 14 as they travel south to play UC Riverside. The game is slated for 3:00 p.m.
