MEN'S SOCCER: Spartans shut out Cal State Northridge

SAN JOSE - San Jose State University recorded their second straight shutout of the season September 8, a 1-0 win over Cal State Northridge in a non-conference men's soccer game at Spartan Stadium.

The Spartans scored the only goal of the night at the 47:11 mark. Fausto Villegas scored from the left side, on an assist from Jorge Martinez. It was the first goal of the season for Villegas and Martinez' third assist.

SJSU goalkeeper Chris Humphries recorded his second shutout of the season. Cal State Northridge managed just four total shots during the game, but Humphries was not forced to make a save. San Jose State, meanwhile, tallied 32 total shots and 15 shots on goal.

"This game could've been five or six to nothing," commented San Jose State head coach Gary St. Clair. "We made it more interesting than it needed to be.

"Our defense played well. You have to win 1-0 games. I'm very pleased with our back row."

The Spartans, now 3-0 overall, return to action next Friday, Sept. 15, with a 7:30 p.m. game at the University of San Francisco.
